Listen to the Quiet Voice

Frustrated with recalibrating to a different guitar while I travel, I decided to let go of practicing repetroire and focus on finding new ideas.  Listening, just listening to the environment around me.  Thinking of a time and space a note appears.  Repeat - another note sings out.  Slowly a melody emerges about me.  Then it stops.  Back to listening. just listening for the quiet voice.  Rest repeat.

Open. Listen. Respond. Listen. Open... Quietly.

Voyage of Discovery

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
Marcel Proust

Play without expectation
explore the sounds
 probe the edges
  daily
patiently

Wake up
Listen
Play
listen
play

listen
with
your heart

Vibrate the feelings
Feel the sound

change direction
release the sound

remember
listen

imagine
look inside

Wander For Life

Wandering creates the desert - Edmund Jabes

A melody awakes the fingers to find her, inviting the nomad to follow.  Entering in the mystery of the sands of time, a rhythm arises taking the melody to a new dune.  Still, barren, huge moments of lost wonder.  The next note is found, teasing the throat of the composer for more fluid motion.  Notes arriving everywhere like sand in boots.  Dunes arising, obscured by the sun, changed by the wind.  Where is the note which points the nomad home?

A new space, an odd rhythm - like an oasis providing sanctuary for the melody to expand.  The nomad overhears the lilt of foreign tongues, shadows embellishing the search, stress brought to the form.  Phrases of freedom and foundation arrive from the ocean of fire. With thirst quenched and
desire strengthened the nomad can not remain in the oasis.  Knowing safety is an illusion, a step away, toward and in the sand is taken.  Another dune arises.  A sandy cliff of possible inspiration or a desperate view of the desert of the unknowing.

Looking back at the footsteps traced in sand, where to turn, when to turn?  Sound bleached to its essence, be this a song of sorrow, forgiveness, hope or love.  Block the glare and be not immune to beauty.  Listen to the silence of the sand harmonized by the shifting winds, taking in the brilliant hues of sunset and opening to the cool whispers of evening.  Tread softly, nomad, with ears wide open.  Follow the flux, prodding the movement and rupturing stasis.  Listen.  Listen to the wander.

Reach for the edge of the boundaries with your heart's ear.  Soar within the sands, embrace the heat of the search, and with parched tongue sing again and again.  Respect the scorched bones of other nomads, learn from them and remain in motion.  Seize the journey because life itself depends upon your work.  Be a nomad in search of truth.

Ear Training for Music and Life

Listening - one key to musicianship and to survival in life.  For musicians there are a variety of ear training programs available to develop this skill.  Processes to develop our listening in life are a bit more elusive and perhaps a bit more difficult to implement when found.

I can listen and learn to identify tones and intervals on my guitar or a piano in a practice studio.  The stakes here are practically nonexistent. But how to practice deep listening with a loved one?  How to listen when another person is distressed?  As our world becomes smaller and full of people who absolutely know that they are right - can I listen to them? Will I listen to them?  Can I listen to the dissonant and complex harmonies of clashing cultural, religious and political storms?  Can I hear in my heart and soul that we all want and need to be heard?  Especially those I dislike?  Those that offend me?  Those I do not understand?

I can hear the urgency of the cry of a loved one in distress, but what about their more subtle and nuanced tones?  When I hear fear, will I resolve it's jagged melody?  Allow the driven tempo of anger to come to rest?  To resolution?  What do I hear in silence?  Effective listening requires practice.  Practice quieting my mind; quieting my feelings.  Practice building awareness of where I am here and now.  Practice, discipline, practice. Very similar to learning an instrument - the voice of love.  Dare I listen as if the world depended on it?  The practice begins - Now!

Let my being
Intently focus on
Speech
Tone
Emotion
Now

After writing this much I was not sure this post was complete.  Time to pick up my guitar I reasoned.  Listen to her and see if any answers or clarity arrived.  Before entering my practice space, I paused, connected with my intention and  myself.  Freedom in playing was my intention.  A few minutes into running through my second piece, Turning the Wheel,  I noticed an internal dialogue was underway.  I paused to quiet, good to listen to myself I reasoned.  Freedom may very well begin in the mind.  After quieting my mind I resumed playing the piece.  After working with a transition, I moved on to an improvisation.  Simple and beautiful.  Then another improvisation which became complicated, judgement arose in my mind.  Can I listen to my improvisations without judgement?  Can I listen to another person without judgement?  Ah the work never ends.

Quiet the Shadows

The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear. - Baba Ram Dass

Becoming.

Becoming quiet is a choice.

At least some of the time.
Increasingly more so, fortunately.

In Quiet
I sometimes see the corners,
even maybe around them.

In hearing
a choice just might
become possible.
Or Habit.

Maybe even listening.

Ability to become quiet
can be practiced.
Must be.

In Quiet
All is possible.

Become quiet
Become.
...

Listen to the shadows.
